Keely Shrubb- 2nd in Performing Arts
What inspired you to be a PA Teacher?
I strongly believe that the Performing Arts has the power to bring people together, to bring a little more
understanding about the world around us, and to bring a little joy!
There were limited opportunities for participating in the Arts when I attended school and this was a strong
motivational force in becoming a teacher and has led to a real passion in enabling all students to have access
to a broad and exciting Arts curriculum.
What is the best part of your job?
It is fantastic to watch students grow as performers and choreographers. Watching students perform with
absolute confidence and conviction and being brave to develop their own ideas and take creative risks is
just wonderful to see and makes the job really fulfilling.
Do you have any heroes?
Gene Kelly and Jerome Robbins – they transformed the Dance on Film genre and helped to make Dance
more accessible to audiences, making dance popular for boys again. ‘Singin in the Rain’ and ‘West Side Story’
holds some of the most exuberant and exciting performances ever recorded on film.
What is special about Esher High School’s PA Department?
There is a strong sense of community with the department and an absolute commitment to providing the
best range of opportunities for students. When you walk through the Arts block you can feel a shared
enthusiasm and energy for Dance, Drama and Music. It’s a vibrant place to work and learn.
