Following the recent trip to Serbia, the students of Esher High School and the Belgrade English Language Youth Theatre will perform ‘New Waters’ on Wednesday 3rd May at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts studio. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Devised by the students themselves, 'New Waters' is a drama piece based on the cultural differences/similarities between the UK and Serbia, with the key theme of ‘rivers’ as a focal point. The short performance will also be streamed live to Serbia so parents of the Serbian children will be able to see the live performance. Please show your support. We'd love to see you there. Esher High School has been invited for the second year in a row to perform at the Elmbridge Primary Music Festival, in Dorking, on the 17th of May as the special guest performance. Under the direction of Mrs. O’Neil, the Elite Singers and a number of duets have been rehearsing during their lunch breaks and plan to impress the children and parents with a selection of music, including “I Will Sing With the Spirit” and music from Wicked, The Musical. Well done and good luck Esher High School!
On Thursday 27 April, our Year 11 GCSE drama students will be previewing their devised exam pieces to parents, friends and family ahead of their final exam on Tuesday 9th May. Admission is free and the Performing Arts department welcomes any drama enthusiasts to attend and provide constructive feedback to the groups!
The showcase begins at 6.30pm on Thursday 27 April at the Performing Arts Centre. Eight students in Year 8 and 9 recently travelled to Serbia on a Drama exchange with the Belgrade English Language Youth Theatre. New friendships were formed quickly after the two groups met and began devising a drama piece based on the cultural differences/similarities between the UK and Serbia, with a key theme of ‘rivers’ as a focal point.
Student Ian Riby said: "I liked experiencing a different culture and devising ideas with the Serbians. It was great to see how great we all got along despite the language barrier." Head of Department for Performing Arts at Esher High, Mr. Allin added: "It was amazing to see how quickly the students ‘clicked’ with each other. The collaboration has proven to be extremely positive and eye-opening for everyone involved." The Serbian company is due to visit the UK at the end of April culminating in a final performance, ‘New Waters’, on Wednesday 3rd May at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Centre at Esher High School. The performance will also be streamed live to Serbia. Admission is in the form of a donation and we would love your support! The Performing Arts department and PAPA would like to extend a big thank you to the RC Sherriff Trust for the generous grant provided for the project to make this exchange happen. As many of you know, a number of Esher High students with a keen interest in Drama are heading off to Serbia at the start of April with Mr. Allin to devise an original show with their counterparts at the Belgrade English Language Youth Theatre group. The Belgrade students will be then be coming over to the UK to finish workshopping the play and to give a performance of the final show.
The team in Serbia are doing everything they can to raise money to help fund visas, travel, tours and funds for the production (including props and costumes), and they have set-up a crowdfunding page with a target of $500 - though of course anything above and beyond this will only help to enhance the students' experience of visiting us in the UK. You can visit the crowdfunding page and support the Belgrade students by clicking here. Find out more about the Belgrade English Language Youth Theatre. |
